Rootsweb Mailing list
You can view the any of the mailing lists worldwide. However, should you wish to post on a particular list you need to register with that list.

Rootsweb Message board
You can view and post on any of the message boards worldwide. All you need is to register once with rootsweb. I tend to use this and post on boards worldwide. Both to request information on a particular family, or to surf boards looking for those trying to trace their Shetland ancestors.

Rootschat.com - Aberdeenshire
RootsChat is essentially a forum that shows a lot of activity across all the sub-forums. These sub-forums cover a wide geographic reach, a common room, techincal help, useful links, a beginners, photograph restoration and deciphering. It does have good moderators on the popular boards and seems to cover a similar function to the Message boards with respect to content and active members.

Aberdeen & West of Scotland Family History Society
The Aberdeen & North-East Scotland Family History Society exists to assist and promote the study of genealogy and family history based on the North-East corner of Scotland. This area covers the old counties of Aberdeenshire, Banffshire, Kincardineshire and Morayshire.

Aberdeen and The North East of Scotland

Aberdeen City Library – Family History page
Old Parish Registers of baptisms, marriages and deaths up to 1854; census returns 1841 to 1901 for Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Banffshire and Kincardineshire on microfilm.

These records are not available on line through the library. You must be able to visit.

A brief history of Aberdeen
An extensive series of local histories written by a that has developed into a World History encyclopedia. Written by a history graduate of Lancaster University. For the family historian wanting to find out more about a particular place, or time, this is a useful resource.

I have provided a direct link to the local area. However, should you wish to explore this resource, here is the link to the main page.

The Press and Journal
The Press and Journal has a good coverage of news from Aberdeen and North East Scotland. It also has a family announcements page that will allow you to search for recent births, deaths, engagements covering about the two years.

About this video

  • Good images of Aberdeen City Centre
  • The video is shot with easy to follow transitions and occasional use of the zoom function.
  • Easy listening music accompanies the video.
  • Conclusion: worth viewing.

Hrossey Leaving Aberdeen for Shetland (5:22)

This will allow you to view a YouTube video that has been carefully selected by me. To view the video, press the arrow in the centre. When the video is running, you take the cursor over the bottom edge of the 'screen' then you will be able to stop/start and/or adjust the volume. Enjoy.

About this video

  • A bit noisy with sound picking up the strong wind. Perhaps giving atmosphere.
  • Some good views but spoilt by the author constantly moving position and too much use of the zoom function.
  • In spite of the comments above, worth viewing.
  • I would also like to have seen a short sequence at the arrival.

This is a Visit Scotland website covering Aberdeen. It has some good information and photographs.
