Births, Marriages and Deaths

This section provides links to BMD sites, also to public databases giving BMD and census material.

  1. Historic Shetland Transcriptions...This will link directly to the home page of Janice Halcrow.

    Janice has developed her own website, quote "which aims to provide historic births, marriages and death announcements made in the Shetland newspapers available to as wide an audience as possible. The Zetland Times started publication in 1872 and changed its name to The Shetland Times in 1873 and as such it continues to this day. The Shetland News was published from 1885 to 1963."

    Janice has provided these in RTF and PDF formats for easy download.

  2. Scotlands People....This will link directly to the home page of ScotlandsPeople.

    A pay per view site, covers Births, Marriages and Deaths from Statutory Registers, Old Parish Registers and Catholic Registers. It also contains full census data from 1841 to 1911; Valuation Rolls for 1905 and 1915; Wills and Testaments, and Coats of Arms.

    Their charges are reasonable given that you have good information to start with. It costs £7.00 for 30 ‘page credits’ valid to use within one year. A search is free and will provide the number of ‘hits’. You can then choose to view (25 on a page) for 1 credit per page. If you want to view an actual image this will require a further 5 credits. Therefore that would cost 6 credit or £1.40 – not bad if you have the correct person. You can save the image and return at a later date.

  3. Family Search....This will link directly to the home page of

    Their records span billions of names across hundreds of collections – including birth, marriage, death, probate, land, military, IGI (mainly Old Parish Records) together with many other resources.

    The site also has substantial section on Learning; also a Blog. The best part is that most of the records are freely available online and cover a wide geographic area.

  4. Australia BMDs....This will link directly to the Australia page on this site. Online search resources are given for New South Wales, Tasmania and Western Australia. You can also find other resources specifically for Australia.

  5. Canadian BMDs....This will link directly to the Canada page on this site. Online search resources are given for British Columbia and New Brunswick. Also, online historic directories for Vancouver Island. You can also find other resources specifically for Canada.

  6. BMDs for Shetland ancestors...."This will link directly to page developed and maintained by Bruce Smith. It provides access to a database containing names from the Shetland Times BDM's for the years 1930,and 1988 to the present.There are also a small number of other years VERY partially covered.This information will hopefully help those following their family tree who do not have access to the latest issues of the Shetland Times.

  7. The Scottish Marriage Index....This will give a direct link to the Anglo Scottish Family History Society. Scroll down the page and you will come across The Scottish Marriage Index. The search is by selecting an option from the alphabetic index. When you select one, you are given a file in pdf format with a listing of those individuals contained in the index. It is an interesting resource and might just solve one of your brick walls.

  8. Find my past....This will link directly to the home page of Find My Past.

    A reasonably priced subscription site with or two pay per view options. For example, a Britain Full subscription is £109.95 – It is mainly England and Wales – includes 1841 – 1911 census; births, marriages and deaths; military; newspapers; parish records; travel and migration and several other categories. It costs a further £50 if you want World (this adds USA, Australia, New Zealand and All Ireland records).

    I checked using my grandmother, born in Leith – without success. Then another from Durham with two, first names and obtained several responses.
